More Revenue, Tourists and Adventure for Cross River State
The Cross River State Government has officially begun preparations for Calabar Carnival 2026, Africa’s biggest street party. The month-long festival will fill the state capital with parades, music and cultural showcases, and the state expects it to bring in more tourists, more business and more revenue.
Carnival Dry Run Flagged Off
One of the first major activities was the Carnival Dry Run in Calabar, formally flagged off by the Deputy Governor, Rt Hon. Peter Odey. The dry run tests the readiness of the competing bands as the main event approaches, so that the costumes, choreography, music and logistics are in place before the December parades

A Bigger Economic Goal for 2026
Calabar Carnival 2026 aims to attract large numbers of visitors, grow tourism revenue and cement the city’s place as the top December destination for Africans. Gab Onah, Chairman of the Cross River State Carnival Commission, said the government is building on the estimated ₦19 billion economic impact of the 2025 edition. The plan is to bring in more business opportunities and increase public participation this year and beyond.
The carnival has run since 2004 and has grown into one of Nigeria’s best-known cultural events. It supports hotels, restaurants, transport operators, event vendors, fashion designers and many small businesses across the state.

New Online Platform Opens Participation
The Carnival Commission has launched an online platform where residents and citizens can register and vote for friends and family as band members and for the Band of the Year. According to Onah, the initiative is meant to move people beyond watching the parades and connect more of them to the festival.
Carnival Theme: “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny”
This year’s edition carries the theme “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.” Onah explained that the theme promotes unity, inclusiveness and shared humanity.

Star-Studded Lineup Expected
The carnival is expected to feature Nigerian music star Davido alongside other prominent musicians. Actors and entertainers have also shown interest in taking part, and talks with international participants are ongoing. Details will be announced as plans are finalized.

Why Calabar Carnival Matters
Calabar Carnival is one of Cross River State’s most important annual tourism events. It brings visitors from across Nigeria and abroad and creates business and job opportunities across the state. With the dry run complete and the online platform live, preparations for 2026 are well under way.
