Jonathan Calls 2027 Elections a Test of Nigeria’s Democratic Maturity
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described the forthcoming 2027 general elections as a test of the nation’s democratic maturity. He urged all contenders and voters, at every level, to put oneness, peace, justice and unity first.
Jonathan made the remarks as Nigerians marked Independence Day, celebrating 66 years of nationhood and the meaningful achievements recorded along the way.

“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.
The former president noted that the nation has faced severe challenges but has pressed on toward success with resilience and hope for a greater Nigeria.
He praised the country’s remarkable and commendable journey in infrastructure, human capacity development, agriculture, housing, education and health. As preparations for the next electoral season gather momentum, he advised citizens to remain patriotic and committed to national unity.
“Today, our nation reaches another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we gained our independence and assumed control of our destiny. Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant,” he said.
Speaking as a key stakeholder and peace advocate, Jonathan called on leaders and administrators at all levels to show deeper patriotism. He urged them to confront the country’s social and economic challenges through personal sacrifice, good governance and accountability.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” he said.
Reflecting on 66 years of commitment, zeal for greatness and steadfastness, the former national leader described Nigeria as a country blessed with immense opportunities and abundant natural and human resources.
He also used the occasion to charge the youth to remain hopeful and courageous as they work toward a nation that will offer a prosperous future for generations to come.
