A US Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed on Tuesday afternoon, September 22, 2026, while coming in to land at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany. The pilot ejected before impact and is being treated for injuries. Officials have not said what caused the crash.

What happened

The F-16 Fighting Falcon belonged to the 52nd Fighter Wing, which is based at Spangdahlem in the Rhineland-Palatinate region. The base said the jet went down at about 2:30 p.m. local time.

“Emergency response personnel are on scene. The cause of the incident is under investigation,” Spangdahlem Air Base said in a statement reported by ABC News.

Reuters, citing Germany’s air traffic control, reported that four F-16s had been on a training flight. Two of them stayed in the training area while the other two headed back to base, and one of those two is believed to have crashed on approach. The remaining jets then landed at Ramstein Air Base. Some aviation outlets described the mission as a two-ship training flight, so the exact details may change as the Air Force releases more information.

The pilot’s name has not been released. According to the 52nd Fighter Wing, the pilot ejected safely and is still receiving medical care in Germany. No deaths have been reported, and no reports so far mention anyone hurt on the ground.

A large column of black smoke

Birthe Thomsen, mayor of the nearby town of Speicher, saw the jet come down. “I saw it go down quickly and then a large column of black smoke,” she said, as quoted by The Aviationist.

The Aviationist also reported that the jet came down on the base’s golf course, under the approach path to Runway 04 and close to the runway threshold. Emergency crews put out the fire quickly. Photos shared on social media showed smoke rising near the airfield.

About the 52nd Fighter Wing

The 52nd Fighter Wing is one of the Air Force’s main fighter units in Europe. It includes the 480th Fighter Squadron, which flies the F-16CM/DM. The squadron’s main job is suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), meaning it finds and disables enemy radar and surface-to-air missile sites. The squadron trains often with NATO allies across Europe.

Second F-16 crash in a week

This is the second US F-16 crash in less than a week. On September 17, an F-16 from the 149th Fighter Wing, a Texas Air National Guard unit, crashed in northern Michigan. That pilot also ejected safely. The War Zone reported that air traffic control audio from that incident included the words: “we have a possible mayday. My wingman may have taken a bird.”

Nothing so far links the two crashes.

The Air Force has opened an investigation. Military crash investigations usually include a safety review, which looks for ways to prevent similar accidents, and a separate accident investigation board. Final findings often take months to be published. The 52nd Fighter Wing said more details will be released when they are available.
