Election 2027: Nigerians Demand Peace, Jobs and Security
As Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general election, citizens and prominent voices across the country are raising concerns about the conduct of the polls. Voters will choose a president, governors, senators, members of the house of representatives and members of the house of assembly across the thirty-six (36) states of the federation. The chief worry is that campaigns, political consultations, the promotion of candidates and the election itself should all remain peaceful and free of violence.

Many Nigerians describe politics as a game of historical calculations, personal convictions and interests, shaped by the track records of individuals who have held public office or worked in the private sector. They argue convincingly that the pursuit of political interest should go beyond conflict, gang wars, tribal sentiment and religious opposition, because the country is bigger than any single group of people.
Recent comments on Twitter and Facebook show how much citizens are focused on everyday hardship: rising inflation, the fuel subsidy, unemployment and insecurity. Nigerians want aspiring office holders to respond with credible plans for lasting economic recovery. In recent times, the public has also called for peaceful politicking and greater awareness of potential candidates ahead of the general elections.
A Viral Statement Sparks Fear in Edo State
One viral statement has left many Nigerians and residents of Edo State confused and dismayed. It came from Mr Jarrett Tenebe, the current chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state.

Speaking to party members and supporters, Tenebe said the ruling APC in Edo State is ready to deliver 2.5 million votes to His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a successful return to office for a second term. He added that any opposition wishing to stand against the party will receive “AK-47 Fire.”
“Anybody standing in the way of Edo State not to deliver the 2.5 million votes to the President of Nigeria will receive a prayer greater than the Holy Spirit, which is AK-47 Fire.”
The chairman also called on leading presidential candidates His Excellency Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress and His Excellency Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress to write officially to the state’s executive governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo. They would need to seek express approval for their campaigns, he said, and without that approval they cannot enter Edo State.

Amnesty International Responds
Amnesty International Nigeria has urged all categories of security operators to move quickly to investigate politicians who are trying to cause havoc and destruction in the 36 states of the federation. The organisation made the call in a statement posted recently on its official Facebook page:
“We call on Nigerian security agencies to investigate and hold accountable politicians accused of making threats of political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
Questions From the Public
The party chairman’s remarks have raised serious questions among the public. Many want to know about the constitutional right of a sitting governor to stop an opposition party from carrying out campaign activities in the state.

On Twitter, a user identified as Uncle Jay asked: “If Edo APC is so confident that they will deliver 2.5 million votes for the President, why are they afraid of opposition, and why are they threatening violence against opposition?”
Jay noted that the recent verbal attacks by politicians in Nigeria call for stronger collaboration among all security operatives, as well as peace talks at every level. This is especially important as the country heads toward the main elections and, in particular, the consultation phase.
