Jehovah’s Witnesses Make a U-Turn Regarding Blood Transfusions
The global leadership of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church has officially announced to the public that their members across the world now have the sole right to accept and decide on the four main components of blood donation based on their conviction and conscience.
The headship of the organisation announced the all-important decision at its headquarters in Warwick, New York.
Speaking on behalf of the Witnesses Church, the spokesman, Paul Gillies, explained that their organisation duly recognises the importance of medical decisions involving blood components. He affirmed that it is a matter of conscience between the Creator and all witnesses.
“Blood remains sacred to Jehovah’s Witnesses, who continue to regard life and blood as precious gifts from God.”
Mr Paul stated that the organisation made the pertinent adjustment following their earlier updates regarding blood fractions and the use of another during medical procedures.
However, he informed the media that his church’s position on whole-blood transfusion had not changed, noting the fact that it is their core biblical teaching, basically on the command to abstain from blood.
Gillies further said the church congregations will not interfere in members’ personal decisions.
“Congregations do not involve themselves in personal decisions that rest with the individual conscience. We will continue to respect and support the personal decisions of our fellow believers.”
The body of Christ is grateful to all the skilled and compassionate physicians who have provided quality medical care and have shown respect for their view regarding blood, he stated.
Conclusively, the clarification permitted an individual in the church to decide whether their blood could be removed, stored and returned to them during medical treatment, while the organisation maintained its position against receiving blood from another person.
According to research and reliable information from the church’s international headquarters, the organisation had over nine million members as of 2026 across two hundred countries.
The Jehovah’s Witness Organisation was established by Charles Taze Russell in the early 1870s in the United States of America.
The group was first called Bible Students and later changed to International Bible Students Association.
The church later had a change of leadership in the year 1916 with Joseph Franklin Rutherford. He brought about major changes in the church. Fast forward to the present generation, the church has expanded in various countries with infrastructural development.
