The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, 12 June 2024 in his address congratulated the citizens of Nigeria on the nation’s 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
He highlighted the struggles of the nation over the years also pointing out the heroes and heroines lost to this struggle over the years like chief MKO Abiola; the most significant symbol of our democratic struggle, Gen. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, pa Alfred Rewane, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, amongst others.
President Bola Tinubu, in his Democracy Day speech, went on to assure the nation that the executive bill, which proposes a revision of the national minimum wage, was soon going to be passed on to the National Assembly for approval.
Although the new minimum wage wasn’t announced, it is assumed that the N62,000 presented by the Tripartite Committee is most likely going to stand. This announcement by the president underscores the government’s approach to addressing the concerns of workers and ensuring fair compensation.
President Bola Tinubu assured the citizens of his dedication to the improvement of the economic situation, saying, “There is no doubt reforms have occasioned hardship. Yet, they are necessary repairs required to fix the economy in the long run so that everyone has access to economic opportunity, fair pay, and compensation for his endeavor and labour.
As we continue to reform the economy, I shall always listen to the people and will never turn my back on you.”
Speaking further, the president expressed his regrets over the state of negotiations with labour over their call for a nationwide strike, stating that his administration did not seek to oppress the workers. “Reasoned discussion and principled compromise are hallmarks of democracy. These themes shall continue to animate my policies and interactions with the constituent parts of our political economy,” Tinubu stated.
