What We Actually Know About the Bangladeshi Couple Executed in Saudi Arabia

A story is spreading fast on social media. A young Bangladeshi couple on honeymoon in Mecca kissed on the forehead in a mosque, and for that they were put to death. The version going around is raw and heartbreaking, but it doesn’t match what has been confirmed. The real facts are bleaker in some ways and murkier in others.

What Saudi Officials Have Confirmed

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior and the Saudi Press Agency said two people, named Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were executed in the Mecca region on 14 October 2026 after a court found them guilty of violating the sanctity of a mosque through an “immoral” act. Reports say the sentence was handed down under ta’zir, a category of Islamic punishment in which judges have wide discretion.

Bangladish Couples Executed in Saudi Arabia

Two points of confusion are worth clearing up. The man’s name is Nazrul Islam. “Abdul Basir” appears to be his father’s name, and his father, Abdul Basir, said he had sent Nazrul abroad while still in college to support the family. The woman’s name is also reported as Siti rather than “Siri”.

What Remains Unverified

The kiss on the forehead, the honeymoon and the idea that this was an act of gratitude to God for a beautiful bride all come from social media and from accounts circulating in Bangladesh. The ministry’s public statement does not establish a specific link between the conviction and a forehead kiss.

Other posts claim a Pakistani national recorded the couple and reported them. Some say the couple couldn’t follow the Arabic proceedings and mistook a court phrase for forgiveness. These stories are moving, but they are unverified.

Bodies Of The Executed Couple Brought Back To Bangladish

Even the “newlyweds” detail is shaky. One viral post refers to the couple as a child’s parents and says they were filming a video when they kissed, which doesn’t fit a honeymoon. Nazrul’s family rejected the claims made about him, according to Prothom Alo.

Even the return of the bodies is unclear. One report says the repatriation of their remains has been delayed, while other outlets say the coffins have already arrived. Both can’t be right.

Why the Story Resonated So Strongly

Whatever happened in that mosque, people reacted so strongly because the story touches something universal. A kiss on a loved one’s forehead is a very innocent gesture, and the thought that it could end in an execution is difficult to accept.

Why Bangladish Couples Was Executed in Saudi Arabia

Some people shared their experiences, saying they had hugged and kissed their spouses near Mecca’s Grand Mosque without trouble and had seen other couples showing affection. There are also questions about process. The Daily Star reported that Bangladesh’s consulate in Jeddah received a list of imprisoned Bangladeshis in September that included both names, which raises the question of what was done between that list and the executions.
