Some stakeholders in a bid to ensure accountability and transparency in governance have advocated for National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill. This submission was made by speakers at a stakeholders’ engagement on National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill held on Wednesday in Lokoja.
The bill is said to be an initiative of the Federal Government through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in a bid to mitigate the country from paper to paperless economy.
In a bid to facilitate the bill, the Ministry and its consultants are engaging stakeholders across the nation hence their presence at the stakeholders’ programme in Lokoja on Wednesday to get inputs from the stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Kogi State Ministry of Information and Communication, Mr. Ebenezer Adurodija observed that the nation is overdue for a digital economy, which is the order of the day.
“Though Kogi has already started to introduce digital methods in the governance space of the state, the bill is a step in the right direction.”
The Legal Consultant of the Stakeholders Engagement, Chukwudi Chimezie, also pointed out that the importance of the bill can not be underestimated as it will enhance digital literacy and the economy.
The National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill aims to drive economic growth through digital technology, improve public service delivery, and create a competitive environment for the Nigerian digital economy.
This bill offers numerous opportunities for businesses to innovate and expand, with improved digital infrastructure and a supportive regulatory environment. Individuals will also benefit from improved access to digital services and better governance through e-Governance initiatives.
It also seeks to create several export-oriented capacities in Nigeria’s digital economy, support international digital trade and investments, and provide a legal framework for these activities.
Still at the event, Mr. William Adah, a lecturer from Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja, and the Executive Director of Challenged Parenthood Initiative, Eunice Agbogun both urged Nigerians and the National Assembly to give the bill the needed support.
