NLC Registers New Motorcycle Operators Union to Address Industry Improvement and Crime Management Officially registering the motorbike Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has established it as the official body for motorbike operators all throughout the nation.
This new union seeks to provide the industry, historically essential but loosely regulated, more organization and control. Revealing the news, Okoro Ogbonnaya, the NLC Chairman from Abia State, presented the executive members of MOUN to reporters in Umuahia on Wednesday.
He underlined that the union was established under Trade Union Act CAP T. 14 of 2004, changed by the Trade Unions (Amendment) Act of 2005.
Ogbonnaya urged public officials, security guards, and government officials to acknowledge and assist the recently established union—which he thinks will be very important for controlling motorcycle activities.
In an interview with the media, Mount’s Abia State chapter chairman, Chukwunyere Egwim, listed the union’s top concerns. Aiming to reduce illegal activity sometimes connected with the industry, he said one of their main objectives is to build a thorough database on motorcyclists in the state.
“We will make sure that any motorbike operator discovered engaged in criminal activities or breaking Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) guidelines will be recognized and held accountable under the law,” Egwim stated.
He underlined that this project is a component of more general attempts to tidy the sector, which has been marred by different criminal activity.
Egwim also underlined the union’s dedication to guarantee members’ health and safety and pointed out that riders would have health checks before being let to run.
This action seeks to increase passenger and rider safety. He advised the state administration, though, not to ignore motorcyclists who carry commodities and passengers from rural areas.
Although he acknowledged the need of following urban limits, he demanded more help and appreciation of the vital part these operators do in linking the hinterlands to the city.
With this new alliance, the NLC intends to bring professionalism and discipline to the motorcycle industry so that riders not only boost the economy but also operate legally.
