A phone interview with former Ambassador Oji Ngofa from Eleme revealed that the recently appointed chairman Brain Gokpa arrived at the council secretariat accompanied by his councilors and supporters but found that several of the council facilities had been set ablaze.
The new council chairman, his advisers, and supporters have promised to take over the secretariat come what may. Some unidentified people have blocked the secretariat’s entrance in Emohua council.
They are against David Omereju’s appointment as the new Chairman resuming. They are heard screaming “No Wike, No Rivers State!!!” in a social media video. As of yet, no arrests have been recorded; the police have not issued any comments on the matter.
In several of the state’s councils, there is a clear concern about a possible violence outbreak. Controversies dogged the run-up to the Rivers LG elections.
Though specifics are still lacking, the incident follows the Action Peoples Party’s (APP) sweep of the Rivers Local Government Elections.
On Monday, following the police revealing the council secretariats in accordance with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), there was a dispute in the Ahoada Local Government Area of the state.
Channels Television discovered that some police personnel were seen shooting into the air to scatter some people attempting to stop the chairman of Ahoada East LGA from resuming.
The L.G.A of the Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, is Ahoada East.
The event follows municipal polls in an oil-rich state several days away. The Action Peoples Party (APP) swept the polls; it won 22 out of the 23 LGAs, while the Action Alliance (AA) claimed the one left.
