THE FIGHT AGAISNT HUMAN TRAFFICKING, EIGHT GIRLS RESCUED

Eight girls have been rescued from Ghana. This was disclosed in an information issued by the Media public relations and protocols unit.

Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa  received  the young ladies at the NiDCOM Annex Office in Lagos .

The NiDCOM boss-  acknowledged that the efforts of the Renewed Hope Initiative in commiting to the fight for human trafficking and orienting the rights of Nigerian citizen both in Nigeria and in the Diaspora.

These girls were interviewed. It was realised that these young girls were between the ages of 15 to 22 and were  supposed to be working as they were informed, rather than prostituting.

In a statement made by one of the rescued girls, she recounted her episode after she had been lured to embark on the  illicit journey from Lagos to Ghana.

In her words,
“…and he even told us that those police people that used to be in the water, if they ask us were we are going, we  should say that we are going to Togo. So,
when we now cross the water, we spend a day and half in the water. So when we reach his house, he gave us food. The next day,he took is to  baba’s place. We asked him what are we doing here,  he said, we will have to take an oath that we wouldn’t steal his money since we came yo work as sales girls for him. So after taking the oat, when we reach home, the wife now come out and give us bra and pant . My sister now ask her what we were doing with bra and pant. Is what we are going to wear? The woman now said that she is sorry that we came here for prostitution work, then we now started crying. The woman said, that we have no other option and that we would be paying her three hundred cedis every day”

Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), admonished then and sincerely thanked all who participated in the rescue process of the young girls.

The girls were to remain with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)  where  they will be safe and accommodation given pending their reunion with their families.

She appreciated the first lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu  for her efforts in ensuring the return of the girls, Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, President for the Nigeria’s in Diaspora Organisation(NIDO) for his  and the Interpol Units of  Nigeria and Ghana.

The Chairman of NAPTIP also  informed that there still trafficked victims waiting to be rescued in Ghana. Hence, she thanked the Ghana security agencies for their efforts.

In the same vein, Ms. Favour Ugwu, a 28 years old female trafficker was nabbed and has been sent to jail for eight years in Ghana.
