Recently, the idea for literacy has diversified. It accounts for and may no longer be limited or strictly attributed to reading, writing, or even having a good command of the English language in expression.
However, it may include knowledge of the media and all that concerns events, information and ideas relating to the media world(Media literacy). It may also sum up to the application of numerical strengths in daily life activities (Numerical Literacy) or the ability to understand health care issues and profer solutions(health literacy)
So you can understand that traditional rulers or griots without full understanding or knowledge of the English language may be literate in a way,in as much as he/she is abreast with the communities rules and idiosyncrasies (cultural literacy).
Howbeit, the International literacy day, celebrated on the 8th of September, yearly addresses the need to create a sustainable environment through literacy.
The United Educational Scientific and cultural organisation institutionalised this feat in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for personal, community and international growth.
Hence, the international literacy day 2024 is marked with the theme “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.”
The international event will be held on the 9th and 10th of September, 2024 in
Yaoundé, Cameroon,
