On behalf of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, the renowned Afrobeats superstar Rema was presented with a distinguished royal plaque.
In preparation for Rema’s homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City, the Oba bestowed this accolade onto the singer on Thursday, during the artist’s visit to the royal palace (which took place before the show).
The day before, Rema was present at the groundbreaking celebration for the Edo Arena, where she was joined by Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State.
Recognizing the singer’s services, the governor disclosed that the arena, which has a capacity of 6,000 people, would be christened Rema Dome.
Divine Ikubor, better known by his stage name Rema, is a native of Benin City. He has been a persistent representative of Edo State, bringing attention to the rich legacy of the ancient Benin kingdom through his songs and their performances.
A tribute to Benin City can be found in his most recent chart-topping single, “Benin Boys,” which also features Shallipopi, a native of Edo. Rema makes it clear in the song that he ought to be recognized by the Oba for the work he has made to advance the realm.
