ASABA: Delta government implements minimum wage

The State Government has decided to initiate discussions with the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, regarding the implementation of the new minimum pay.

Declaring that it has directed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, to start the negotiations with NLC, it said it will not pay less than the N70,000 mandated by law.

Saying that the conversation was expected to be finished in a week, the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, revealed this in a post-Exco briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at Government House, Asaba.

Osuoza added that the discussions between the government and organized labor would center on the resulting changes in the new minimum wage.

Osuoza said Governor Oborevwori briefed Exco about the current state of economic difficulty and instructed the Chief Job Creation Officer and Commissioner for Agriculture to highlight initiatives meant to lessen the impact of the suffering, particularly on young people all throughout the state.

He said Exco approved Obi Sunday Ubaka Ogboli’s appointment as Obi of Issele-Mkpitime in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

Osuoza also said that Exco approved the rebuilding of the 30.5 km Ohoror-Bomadi Road; construction of the Olomoro-Igbide Road 5.7 km; construction of the 4.8 km Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road Phase 2; 1.3 km Otekpo Road in Ellu, Idumu-Etiti Street with a spur to market Road, Owere-Olubo 1 km.

Speaking with reporters at the briefing, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), noted that 23 out of 25 local government districts directly affected by the Exco approvals support Governor Oborevwori’s Meaningful Developments plans throughout the state.

The State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, said the approval will help the state government reclaim areas damaged by gully erosion for the sustainability of the new road.

“His Excellency, in his good wisdom, gave approval for the Ministry of Health to procure two CT scanning machines, one for Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, and the other one for the Central Hospital, Warri,” the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, said.

“Some of our resident doctors require these machines to obtain certification; these are higher education institutions that educate them.”

Therefore, it is a benefit for the state government to get these machines for the two tertiary institutions within the state, he said. Furthermore, he revealed that the Ministry of Health has permission to remodel more than 150 primary health facilities throughout the state.
