Q1 2024: 23 Nigerian electrical workers die on duty – NERC

This information is derived from the most recent report that was published by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

According to the report that was compiled by the Commission, there were 55 accidents that occurred during the first quarter of 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 53 workers.

According to the National Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC), 31 additional people were injured in the 55 accidents that were registered during the time under consideration.

According to the findings of the report, the total number of accidents that occurred during the first quarter of 2024 was 55, with 31 people suffered injuries and 23 people lost their lives.

A breakdown of the major causes of casualties (deaths and injuries) that were recorded in the first quarter of 2024 is as follows: wire snaps was responsible for six deaths and six injuries; illegal or unauthorised access was responsible for five deaths and two injuries; acts of vandalism was responsible for two deaths and five injuries; unsafe acts or conditions were responsible for ten deaths and twelve injuries; and falls from height were responsible for two injuries.

The licensees that had the largest number of casualties were Eko Disco (13), Benin Disco (8), Jos Disco (6), and Aba Power (6), according to the report. The total number of casualties that were reported during the quarter was 54.

According to a portion of the report, “Cumulatively, Discos accounted for 96.30 percent of casualties recorded in 2024/Q1,” repeating a pattern that was seen in previous quarters (98.48 percent in 2023/Q4), the distribution segment is the most significant contributor to safety issues that are experienced in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

It is clear from the research that the Nigerian electricity supply industry does not have any safety protocols in place.
