The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Cross River State Council was the target of an assault by more than one hundred thugs who targeted a bus that was carrying palliatives.
Journalists, upon receiving information from the Director of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), Reverend James Anam, as beneficiaries of the current phase of distribution, hurriedly moved to the government warehouse and successfully conveyed the food items from Barracks Road, Calabar that were being distributed.
An assault was carried out on the vehicle that was transporting palliatives to the NUJ Secretariat approximately one day ago. Burglars hurled stones at the vehicle as it moved slowly, and then removed food items from the smashed windows of the vehicle.
According to the testimony of the bus driver, Joseph Akpaenin, whose phone was taken and who himself suffered a bruised shoulder as a result of the attack, their saviour was the moment when the booth of the bus flung open and several bags of rice and garri dropped off. He stated that the mob’s attention shifted from the bus to the items that were dropping off the bus, which allowed him to escape to safety.
Joseph Abasi-Abasi, a reporter for the Tribune, and Saviour Ekpenyong, an auxiliary staff member for the Council, both endured severe injuries and bruises as a result of the horrible attack. Both of them are currently undergoing treatment at a medical institution that has not been identified.
