NDIC Liquidates Heritage Bank

The Director Communications and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Mr. Bashir A. Nuhu, in a press release on Monday, June 3, 2024 announced the commencement of the liquidation of Heritage Bank plc following the revocation of the bank’s licence by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The corporation, which was charged by CBN to oversee the liquidation of Heritage Bank through it’s director, assured the depositors of the bank of the safety of their funds and began verification and payment of insured deposits to depositors.

While members of the public with alternate accounts within the industry were to be paid up to the insured amount of N5 million using their Bank Verification Number (BVN) to locate their accounts, depositors with funds in excess of N5 million will be paid a liquidation dividend upon realisation of the bank’s assets and recovery of debts owed to the bank.

Furthermore, all depositors without alternate accounts were advised to visit the nearest branch of the bank with proof of account ownership, verifiable means of identification such as National Identity Card, permanent voter’s card, or driver’s licence, together with their alternate account and BVN for verification of their deposits and subsequent payment of insured funds. However, depositors were also left with the option of filing an online claim by visiting the NDIC website claims page on http://www.ndic.gov.ng/claims.

Also, Mr. Bashir advised creditors of the firm to visit the nearest branch or to fill out out the online form for their payment, which is scheduled to commence shortly after all the depositors have been paid. He also pointed out that debtors who were yet to complete the repayment of their loans were to contact the corporation’s Asset Management Department (AMD).

Mr. Bashir concluded by assuring the banking public of the NDIC’s commitment to ensuring the funds of depositors in all licensed banks, urging the public to continue banking operations with licensed banks indiscriminately.

Will this action has caused a lot of social unrest among customers of the bank there has been various cases of violence occurring at some branches particularly in the southern part of the country as customers are denied access into the banks. An indigene of Calabar who pleaded anonymity expressed his sadness as he used his Heritage account for receiving his salary which has been withheld, thereby, causing untold hardship for him and his household over the past 2 weeks. http://ndic.gov.ng/ndic-commences-liquidation-of-heritage-bank/
